言語は、人間と他の動物を分かつ認知機能の一つである。その意味で言語の研究は生物学に属する。本書は、慶應義塾大学「論理と感性の先端的教育研究拠点」の「言語の生物学」をテーマにした国際シンポジウムFuture Trends in the Biology of Language(2011年3月開催)に基づいている。第1章「言語の遺伝学」、第2章「言語の進化」、第3章「言語の脳科学」、第4章「言語の獲得」と4つの部に分けて10編の論文を掲載。「生物学としての言語学」の現在と未来を描き出す(全英文)。
